What we've been working on and a FREEBIE!

This semester has been so incredibly busy! My students have been working so hard on our Character unit.  We have focused on a variety of skills but have really emphasized identifying/describing character traits and visualizing what we are reading. One of my favorite books to use with this unit is Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big by John Lithgow. This is an amazing read aloud. The vocabulary is rich and it lends itself to such a natural rhythm. I like to introduce this book by reading aloud to my students without showing them any of the illustrations. They just have to listen and paint a picture in their mind of the events in the story. Then we complete our graphic organizer. Students are asked to choose their favorite part of the story and draw a picture of it. They are also required to provide evidence from the text that shows what information they used for their visualization.

We also use an additional organizer to list character traits for one of the main characters. Again, students must provide text evidence to show what information helped them discover the character traits and how the character changes over time.

My students loved this story and did a great job completing these two activities!
